Joe Mauro - Percussion
Joe Mauro started playing the drums in junior high school. His first private teacher was Bob Spangler who played with the Vincent Lopez and Glenn Miller bands. He then studied with Alan Abel and Charles Owen of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Joe taught instrumental music in the Abington School District for 28 years. As director of bands at Abington Senior High School, he directed the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and the Marching Band. He is presently the director of bands at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, where he directs the Concert and Symphonic Bands and teaches private percussion lessons.
Joe earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree at Temple University and a Master of Music degree at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He has completed additional graduate work at Villanova and Temple Universities. He was a member of the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C., performing with the Concert Band, Ceremonial Band, and the Diplomats jazz quartet. While a member of the band he performed numerous times at the State Department, the Smithsonian Institution, and the White House.
Joe maintains an active performance schedule as a percussionist with the Veteran’s Association of Military Musicians Concert and Jazz Bands, The “Main Street Sound” and “In Full Swing” big bands, the Academy Chamber Society, and the Bryn Athyn Cathedral Orchestra. He is also active as an adjudicator of concert and jazz band festivals in the Southeastern Pennsylvania area. He is a member of the Phi Beta Mu band masters fraternity.
